I love learning new things. Not so long ago, inspired by Neil MacGregor’s History of the World in 100 objects, I joined the British Museum. Right now I’m getting to grips with the MapFactor app on my new phone. Technologically and practically challenged, I’m greatly appreciative of men (indeed anyone) with these skills.
I’ve just bought a new TV after several years without; I’m a radio head at heart. I’d hate to be without iPlayer and BBC Radio 4. A recent favourite has been Sue Limb’s Gloomsbury. I also loved watching Mark Rylance in Wolf Hall. If I was in charge of the Department for Education, that book might be on my list of required reading, along with Atul Gawande’s ‘Being Mortal’.
Another love is cooking for friends. My sag dhal and gluten-free brownies were both recently lauded best ever in class. I don’t eat meat, but would hope to interest you in the delicious and healthy scope of a veggie and fish diet. Followed by cuddling up on the sofa, and maybe watching a good film.
Aside from work and play I’ve been volunteering for Citizen’s Advice for the past couple of years. The people are great, and it’s ever interesting, dealing with anything from boundary disputes to unscrupulous employers. Last Christmas was spent on an advice team with Crisis, who have totally overturned my preconceptions about homeless people: all have heartbreaking stories, and some have a brilliant sense of humour – a huge asset in their circumstances.
I have a regular Buddhist meditation practice, and I’ve done many retreats and courses, which means that I'm committed to trying to live as kind and compassionate a life as possible. I've found it an amazing source of joy, and it helps me to be happier, less stressed, and more able to roll with the ups and downs of life and be available to others, including the lovely man I hope to meet.
